Described as ‘one of the greatest jewelry designers of the 21st century,’ Alexis Bittar will celebrate 25 years of working with his brand’s signature material – Lucite® – in 2015. And on 18 February, as part of his first ever show at New York Fashion Week, Bittar will reveal pieces from his Fall 2015 Collection. But that is not all we’ll see of Lucite® material!
In addition, to mark the 25 years of craftsmanship with Lucite®, which he describes as a seven-step process that includes hand-carving, hand-painting and hand-polishing, Bittar has asked contemporary artists Cordy Ryman, Natasha Law, Juliette Losq and Mickalene Thomas to each create their own art pieces from the medium. These individual pieces will all be auctioned at the event by Artspace and the proceeds from the sales will benefit the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Community Center of which Bittar is a board member.
The February show of Bittar’s work with Lucite® marks a year-long celebration, which sees him opening two new boutiques in Washington, DC and Las Vegas as well as the launch of an exciting new advertising campaign featuring portraits of 19 year old Tavi Gevinson, American magazine editor, writer, actress and singer and 93 year old fashion icon, Iris Apfel. Bittar said, “In terms of the fashion industry, we’re selling to women who are predominantly over 35, but we’re showing them images of girls who are 19 and retouched. For the campaign, we honed in on the essence of strong women who haven’t conformed. Tavi is so strong and so bright. Iris is kind of like a mother to me at this point and was probably a little annoyed that I never asked her to be in an ad (before).”
