Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations in 2012 brought together two British companies with a shared passion for craftsmanship, precision and innovation. They have now completed a magnificent, floor-standing clock in Perspex® Clear cast acrylic, which now resides in the Queen’s London residence, Buckingham Palace.
Zone Creations has a long, established history of working with Perspex® acrylic. Its award-winning pieces have earned them many accolades and the company is the proud owner of a Royal Warrant. Established in 1850, Comitti London is a British clockmaker, which makes the highest quality, precision English regulator movements. The two companies agreed that the most fitting way to create a timepiece of true timeless beauty was to elect for a Long Case Regulator design; the result is the unique Greenwich Regulator Clock.
Kevin Self, Managing Director of Zone Creations, said: “We wanted the finished piece to blend traditional and modern sensibilities. We also wanted to make sure that it would fit well in the halls of Buckingham Palace. Historically, such clocks would have been housed in wood cabinets with glazed doors to protect the movements but using Perspex® acrylic has allowed us to reveal the stunning 30 day regulator movement in a way that has never been done before.”
The cabinet, crafted by Zone Creations, reflects the Palladian architectural style of Buckingham Palace. The limited edition clock cabinet – only 120 have been produced – is manufactured from the highest quality Perspex® Clear cast acrylic to allow light to flood into the case and illuminate Comitti’s unique movement. Creating a case of such delicate beauty and prodigious strength, while maintaining flawless transparency, is no small matter, but the cabinet is a triumph.
Simon Barker, Managing Director of Comitti said: “Each of its 345 parts is precision-machined from solid brass and steel, then finished, polished, assembled and calibrated by skilled clockmakers. With burnished pivots for longevity, silver-plated solid brass dials, polished blue steel hands, elegant Roman numerals and the choice of rhodium or gold plated finishes, this superior clock movement is as beautiful as it is precise”.
