To mark International Women’s Day, we announced a series of features celebrating the many talented women working at Lucite International (LI). Kerry Duncan, EMEA IT Manager based at our Cassel site in the UK, spoke to us about her career so far.

I first joined the Company – then ICI – in September 1989, and have been in my current role as IT Manager for the EMEA region for the past 10 years.

As for personal development, throughout my career I have consistently been given the opportunity to learn and develop through both structured courses and hands-on experience. All in all, I’m happy with my career progress since joining LI.

What I enjoy most is the wide variety both in terms of the type of work and people I deal with. I also enjoy the fact that there are lots of opportunities to make both team and personal contributions to the day-to-day business.

If I could give advice to women aspiring to work in the chemicals industry, I’d say that there are a wide range of roles available and I would always recommend choosing a career in an area you are interested in as your starting point.

Then, try and get some experience of working in the industry. One summer, I did some work experience in a chemicals laboratory. Although working in a lab wasn’t for me, it helped confirm my desire to work in the chemicals industry – even just a few days in the workplace provides a great insight!
