At Lucite International (LI), “having a passion for safety, health and the environment (SHE)” is our number one priority and a core value for all who work for us. Following the United Nations’ World Day for Safety and Health at Work, we introduced a series of features speaking to SHE specialists at LI about their role.

Today, we hear from Soo Hong Tan, SHE Manager at LI’s Alpha technology MMA production plant in Singapore (LISPL).

What is your current role and when did you join LI?

I’m currently Safety, Health and Environment Manager at LISPL, having joined in October 2016.

What are the key focus points of your role?

To ensure all functional departments within our business are compliant, as well as driving the corporate SHE program to make sure it continues to make a positive difference.

What do you enjoy most about working in SHE?

It’s very rewarding to support LI’s SHE values by sharing my skills and knowledge with all of our stakeholders here at LISPL.

What are the most significant ways in which SHE practices have evolved in the last 10 years?

In the past, it was common to find a top-down approach to carrying out SHE practices. Safety was not always well integrated into businesses.

Nowadays, all employees at every level of our business make a contribution to improving safety, and safety is taken into serious consideration in any business decision.

How does the challenge of causing zero harm/zero injuries influence your work at LI?

It provides the encouragement to stay motivated at all times and to win the ‘hearts and minds’ of all stakeholders. The more this is achieved, the more likely it is that people will work with our SHE values in mind and go home safely at the end of each day.
