At Lucite International (LI), we firmly value investment in learning and development as part of our commitment to those who work for us.

Following the occasion of United Nations’ World Youth Skills Day (July 15th), we’re taking a look at the work being done across all of LI’s global regions to help young people working for us develop their skills as they grow in their careers with us.

Our core values are very important to the work we do every day, and the value of “releasing personal potential” is one that can be seen in action across the whole business.

Looking at the UK as an example, our Cassel site has an excellent record of offering apprenticeship opportunities in a wide range of disciplines from Production Technicians and Instrument & Electrical Technicians to Business Administration roles. Similarly, our Newton Aycliffe, UK site has recruited apprentices into Laboratory roles as well as Electrical Engineering, while our facility in Darwen, UK has experienced success with apprentices in both finance and chemistry.

On a more global scale, internship opportunities for university students exist across all of our regions. Our Beaumont site in the US has been working diligently to expand its relationship with nearby Lamar University, with engineering students being offered valuable industry experience by completing internships alongside their studies. Meanwhile, at our Fite Road site in Tennessee, US Reliability Engineering internships allow students a great insight into the continuous improvements being made as part of the site’s reliability program.

This commitment to offering meaningful internship experience extends also to Asia. Our site in Thailand regularly offers up to fifteen internship roles every year in a broad range of areas including engineering, safety, health and environment (SHE), finance and human resource.

Earlier this year, we heard from two Singapore Polytechnic students who had completed our Singapore site’s six-month internship scheme. Commenting on her time at LI, one student said: “The scheme provides a platform for students to experience the real working environment of a petrochemical plant. After completing this internship, I am more determined to pursue a degree in Chemical Engineering at the local university and then go on to work in the petrochemical industry”.

The work being done to invest in young people’s development across all of our sites is extremely valuable in bridging the gap between education and business and, in doing so, helps LI move forward with a skilled, talented and experienced workforce.
