As a company committed to our people, we take pleasure in welcoming new members into our teams as they begin their journey with us.

Jonathan Clarke joined our Newton Aycliffe, UK site in March this year. We spoke about his role as Shift Manager and got to know him more…

What attracted you to Lucite International?

“I come from a completely different background (23 years in the Royal Air Force as an Aircraft Engineer) with no production experience or chemical industry background. However, my experience in personnel, process engineering and operations management in an adaptive, safety-critical environment along with expertise such as delivering continuous improvement initiatives all lent themselves well to the role here.

“At the interview, I got a sense of the family atmosphere at Newton Aycliffe as well as the senior management team’s vision to improve the site, something I would be heavily involved with. I was really pleased and excited to be offered the job as I wanted to be part of that vision and felt I could bring a lot to help them achieve the site objectives.”

What does a typical day in your role involve?

“Up to now, I’ve been undergoing training to prepare for the Shift Manager role. The training has been varied but coherent – involving safety, health and environment, HR, production processes, site strategy and IT systems to name a few. All of this has been extremely valuable for me to understand how the plant operates.

“Once officially Shift Manager, the typical day will involve management of the production process, ensuring production targets are met safely, enhancing those processes and standards along with the management and development of my shift personnel.”

What do you enjoy most about your work?

“Every day is different with new challenges to tackle. I also feel that I have autonomy to make changes and help move the site forward to meet its strategic objectives. The senior management team at Newton Aycliffe have belief in me to do the role as well undertaking other activities such as developing training packages for the site. This is an exciting place to work where ideas are always welcome and acted upon; I feel part of the team and not just a ‘cog in a gearbox.”

How would you describe the environment/culture here?

“It’s a fairly small site at Newton Aycliffe with around 70 people. Very much a friendly, family environment where everyone is keen to help each other when needed.”

What is your passion outside of work?

“I have two main passions outside of work (apart from my family!). These are motorsports and DJing, mostly disco and house on vinyl, along with restoring turntables.

If you could switch places with one person for a day, who would it be and why?

“Claire Williams OBE – Team Principal for the Williams Formula One team. Williams is one of the oldest in the business and were once the ‘team to be beaten’ with 114 victories since 1975, however they are currently without a race win since 2012. They have the knowledge, heritage and passion but can’t seem to turn that into a winning team.

“Being in Claire’s shoes for a day could make me understand the troubles they are having and what measures they are putting in place to re-instate their position as one of the best in the business. Whether I could help or not would be another matter, but I’d certainly like to be given the opportunity to try, even just for a day!”

Describe working for Lucite International in three words.

“Interesting, involving, challenging.”
