As a company committed to our people, we take pleasure in welcoming new members into our teams as they begin their journey with us.

Sumeera Ahmed joined our Cassel, UK site this year as a Learning and Development Assistant. We spoke about the culture at Lucite International and the best bits about her role…

What attracted you to working for us?

“This role was the perfect opportunity to put my years of experience in learning and development to use in the chemical industry, while telling myself I’m utilising my Chemistry degree!

“Jokes aside, the role is a perfect marriage of both of these passions and, as a ‘Teessider’, working for a company with such heritage held an appeal of its own.”

What does a typical day in your role involve?

“Typically, I manage our LMS (Learning Management System) and coordinate training with external providers. I also prepare and distribute reports so that the wider business is aware of outstanding learning and deal with learning requests.”

“A lot of my work recently has revolved around building courses to technology owner requirements to support the business. Currently, I’m busy producing training material for a Graduate induction happening in October and helping to plan inductions for overhaul events in September and October.”

What do you enjoy most about your work?

“I like that it’s varied and that no two days are the same. My role requires me to work with everyone from process teams to contractors and I enjoy the variety this brings to my role.

“There has been a period of transition for the learning and development team with recent retirements and leavers and I’m enjoying carving out my own space in the department.”

How would you describe the environment/culture here?

“It’s very friendly and open. Everyone I’ve met so far has been approachable and helpful and it’s been a great welcome to the business.”

What is your passion outside of work?

“I enjoy good food (both eating and making) and good books. I love travelling and being outdoors. I climbed Scafell Pike in the Lake District – England’s highest mountain – with friends last year which was an amazing experience.”

If you could switch places with one person for a day, who would it be?

“Jacinda Ardern, the Prime Minister of New Zealand. She made headlines when she attended the UN Assembly in New York with her baby who she was breastfeeding at the time and more recently for her response to the Christchurch massacre.

“She’s smart, compassionate, not afraid to stand up for what she believes in and determined to lead her country with integrity. I’d love to see the world through her eyes for a day.”

Describe working for Lucite International in three words…

“Interesting, challenging, rewarding.”
